Musician

When thinking of Andrew Duffield, most people associate Models, but his experience as a keyboardist, composer, performer, and recording engineer extends into many other spaces.

A founding member of both Whirlywirld and Absent Friends, Duffield released solo work before venturing into composing for film, television and advertising, where his work received critical and commercial acclaim.

Window To The World

Playing keyboards in Ollie Olsen’s pioneering electronic band Whirlywirld, Andrew Duffield recorded a number of tracks including the lead track on their 1978 eponymous EP before leaving to join Models.

Round the Twist Theme

Never have you ever had a polar opposite in styles from the electronic experimental punk of Whirlywirld than you can with the theme song of Round the Twist: one of Australia’s biggest childhood ear-worms.

With Andrew’s music and lyrics brought to life by Tamsin West, Paul Jenning’s hugely popular children’s books leapt from page to the screen for a high rating run of 52 episodes.

The song continues to find new audiences, being used in TV advertising by Sainsbury’s UK in 1998, to open Mark Ronson’s stadium tour in 2015, and soon to feature in a new musical stage adaptation.

This new stage production, written and composed by Paul Hodge – a longtime fan of the show – who says the catchy theme song will have a place in the musical production: “I am one of a generation of kids around the world who grew up watching and loving Round the Twist. Music has always been a core part of the series. The mystery behind the eerie music playing in the lighthouse underpins the show’s first season and the show’s iconic, unforgettable theme song, written by the amazing Andrew Duffield, will play a key part in the musical adaptation.”

I Hear Motion

Infamously inspired by Stevie Wonder’s Superstition, the hypnotic keyboard riff that is the basis of I Hear Motion is one of Andrew’s most recognisable compositions.

The first single off Models’ third studio album, The Pleasure of Your Company, I Hear Motion was also their first top 20 hit, peaking at #16 on the Kent Music Report (later replaced by the ARIA charts). Regularly included on ‘Best Australian Song’ lists, I Hear Motion was nominated for Best Australian Single at the 1983 Countdown Music Awards (later replaced by the ARIA Awards)

Barbados

James Freud’s famous melancholy lyrics are juxtaposed by Andrew Duffield’s reggae-fused keyboards in this #2 breakthrough Australian hit from Models 1985’s album Out Of Mind Out Of Sight.

While Andrew left the band before the albums release, his writing input on this track, and performances on the lead single Big on Love helped pave the way for the LPs success.

Pate Pedestrian

A firm fan favourite, the frenetic energy in the live performance is testament to the collaborative effort that the band took when creating this classic from Models debut album Alphabravocharliedeltaechofoxtrotgolf. Written by Andrew Duffield, Mark Ferrie, Janis Friedenfelds, Sean Kelly

Two Cabs to the Toucan

Another track you are usually guaranteed to hear at a Models performance (to avoid the crowd rioting), with lyrics by Sean Kelly, this was the first track off the experimental Cut Lunch ep and one of the first Models tracks to gain regular airplay.

He’s simply the best

About

In the late 70’s Andrew was experimenting with sounds that could be created on his rudimentary analog synthesisers, working with visionaries like Ollie Olsen (as a member Whirlywirld) and Nick Cave (playing keyboards on The Boys Next Door’s debut album Door, Door).

“We were kind of drawn together by the punk movement, half of them from a new electronic music scene, half from this punk garage rock school, and an amateur kind of soif de vivre — a feeling of just going for it,” Andrew recalls.

In this punk-inspired landscape he scored his first movie, Film Work, only to be lured back into a band environment, joining Sean Kelly in what would become one of Australia’s iconic bands: Models.

After leaving the band in 1985, he started a multi-award winning sound production company for advertising and television, working for the biggest names in the region, including Qantas, Coca-Cola, Nike, and the unforgettable Sick ’em Rex ad for AntzPantz and the quirky Tomatoes … it’s a … Sony television commercial.

In the midst of this work, Andrew released a tribute EP to Jack Little (collaborating with Models alumni Mark Ferrie and James Valentine amongst others in the ensemble), and in 1988 his debut solo album Ten Happy Fingers.

In 1989 he rejoined Sean for the Absent Friends project, a year where he also wrote the insanely catchy theme song for Round The Twist, a song that continues to be played to this day (even being used to open the show for Mark Ronson’s stadium tour in 2015).

Today he continues to play keyboards and record with Models, having resumed his role in the lineup in 2010, stepping in as the role of producer on various musical projects, and also teaches sound design and music composition at RMIT and VCA.
